Port Authority accelerates plan to raise Bayonne Bridge roadway – The Star-Ledger

BAYONNE — The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey now says the Bayonne Bridge roadway will be raised in time for the opening of a widened Panama Canal, an acceleration of the project that could ensure the regional shipping industry will not lose cargo and jobs to competing ports on the East Coast.

Port Authority Chairman David Samson said the agency has cut 6 months off the roadway’s raising, now projected for Fall 2015, rather than in 2016.

Officials said the accelerated schedule is combined with a recent announcement by the Panama Canal Authority that completion of the canal’s highly anticipated widening will be pushed back 6 months due to construction delays. On top of the construction delays, Samson and Port Authority Executive Director Pat Foye said there will be an additional eight months of testing the widened locks following completion of the project before the world’s biggest container ships actually begin passing through the canal on voyages from Asia directly to the East Coast.
