Dynamo’s Cameron gets call to US national team camp

Center back Geoff Cameron, whose move back to defense in September catapulted the Dynamo to the MLS Cup final, has been called up to next month’s U.S. men’s national team camp.

An All-Star and MLS Best XI center back as a second-year player in 2009, Cameron played the midfield most of the last two seasons until Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear moved him back to defense and inserted Brazilian Luiz Camargo in central midfield in September. Those moves propelled the Dynamo on a nine-game unbeaten streak that wasn’t snapped until the 1-0 loss to the L.A. Galaxy at the MLS Cup final.

Cameron earned an invitation from former coach Bob Bradley to a national team camp in 2010, but this is his first call since German legend Jurgen Klinsmann called in his first group in August.

Because the U.S. national team’s two games next month don’t fall on FIFA international fixture dates, Klinsmann has picked mostly domestic-based players to prepare to face Venezuela in Glendale, Ariz., on Jan. 21 and Panama in Panama City, Panama, on Jan. 25.

Kinnear, who earned 55 caps with the U.S. national team in the 1990s, gave Klinsmann a positive scouting report
