1799 George Washington Dies

George Washington, the first president of the United States of America, died at his home in Mount Vernon, Va., on Dec. 14, 1799. Washington had been elected as the nation’s first president because of the leadership he displayed as a commander during the Revolutionary War. He left office in 1797 after serving two terms. Washington died from a respiratory infection he contracted while riding out for business purposes during a sleet storm.
